Information on TRICARE and Medicare When You Turn 65

Are you a retired or disabled veteran with TRICARE? As you approach 65, it’s essential to understand how your TRICARE FOR LIFE benefits will work with Medicare.

Eligibility for TRICARE:

  • TRICARE benefits are available to retired veterans who have served at least 20 years or are disabled.

Current Coverage:

  • If you are a retired or disabled veteran, you likely have either TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select.

Turning 65 – Key Steps:

1. Enroll in Medicare: You can start the enrollment process three months before your birth

month.

2. Automatic Enrollment: If you receive Social Security benefits, you will be

automatically enrolled in Medicare.

3. Manual Enrollment: If you do not receive Social Security benefits, enroll manually at

SSA.GOV.

4. Effective Date: Medicare coverage begins on the first day of your birth month at age 65.

5. Cost of Medicare Part A: No cost, as you have paid into it throughout your working

life.

6. Cost of Medicare Part B: The monthly premium is $174.70, deducted from your Social

Security if applicable.

Transition to TRICARE for Life:

  • Upon enrolling in Medicare, your TRICARE Prime or TRICARE Select will

automatically convert to TRICARE for Life.

  • You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to receive TRICARE for Life benefits.

TRICARE for Life Benefits:

  • Acts as a Medicare Supplement, covering all copays and coinsurance.

  • Includes coverage for prescription drugs.

  • No additional cost for TRICARE for Life.

You may qualify for Additional Benefits at No Cost:

  • Dental

  • Vision

  • Hearing

  • Silver Sneakers

  • OTC

  • Up to $150 rebate towards the $174.70 Part B premium depending on the county and state.
